William Soutar's output of work, most of it produced during the last thirteen bed-ridden years of his life, is quite remarkable. Apart from his regular and lively correspondence, and his poetry both in English and in Scots, he left a long sequence of diaries and journals, as well as a record of his dreams extending over more than twenty years.

Scope and Contents Since 2000, Don Paterson has done much of his writing directly onto his Apple Mac (and subsequent models), and his digital archive appears to contain most of his work – in diverse fields - back to that point. The development of the poems are charted through multiple drafts as he hones a work down to the essence. The prose, some of which seems to form the raw material for his collections of aphorism, is occasionally written at such speed that there is no attempt to correct typos or even spell...

Content Description

A small group of manuscripts that were formerly part of Acc.3184 (now MSS.14877-14881), to be merged with that collection in due course.

The manuscripts were brought together by the Rev. Dr. Alexander Irvine (1773-1824), minister of Fortingall and then Little Dunkeld, Gaelic scholar and collector of Gaelic verse. They comprise correspondence in English, sermons in Gaelic, and Gaelic poetry collected by Irvine.

Scope and Contents Alastair Cram was educated at Perth Academy and Edinburgh University and started his working life as a solicitor in private practice at the Scottish Bar. In the Second World War he saw service with the Royal Regiment of Artillery and SAS during which time he was taken prisoner and was involved in several successful escapes. Scope and Contents Alastair Mackie left his literary remains to his friend, and former pupil, the writer Christopher Rush. The collection was very disordered when Rush received it, and he has carried out extensive work in sorting and listing it, alongside his preparation an edition of Alastair Mackie`s collected poems for publication by Two Ravens Press. Scope and Contents

Born in New Zealand and educated in England, Sydney Goodsir Smith's first poems were in English, but he began writing in Scots in about 1940 and published several volumes of poetry. He also wrote for the stage, radio and television, as well as editing works of Robert Burns and Robert Fergusson. All these interests are reflected in his papers, but his work as an art critic survives in only a few fragmentary items.
